January 9, 1946Mr. George McFadden stopped in at 4:00 o'clock on Tuesday, January 8, to discuss his plans for future work. He made it clear to me that in the work at Cyprus he would pay three-fourths of the costs, and expected the Museum to pay the other one-fourth. He said he would contribute funds for some other Museum project, if they needed it, as he had in the past, but that on the Cyprus excavation standing alone, the cost was to be divided as above stated. In the work at the Acropolis in Athens, he would pay 50%, and the other 50% would be put up by the Museum and/or the Greek Government, or partly by each. I told him that the Board of Managers have approved this on the understanding that the full amount would have to be known before we could agree to put up as much as 50% of the cost. He said he had always understood this, and that he would advise us as soon as he knew about what the cost would be. It is possible that he might not know until after his arrival in Greece.
He then discussed the question of having a Curator for the Classical Section of the Museum. He said he would not recommend Daniel [handwritten: ✱] as his first choice for this position, and that in any event he thought that Daniels should complete his work in Cyprus. Daniels is now doing intelligence work in Greece.
For Curator of the Classical Section - or even for the Directorship - Mr. he recommended Rodney Young, who has had ten years' experience in Greece. Mr. Young is a graduate of St. Pauls and Princeton. He lives in Newark, but his address can be found in the New York Social Register. He is about 40 years old, and at one time was in entire charge of Greek Intelligence for the American Army.
For references on Young, he suggested Miss Swindler of Bryn Mawr College, … continues
