Dear Mrs. Godfrey:
It is my understanding that the Museum is prepared to contribute one thousand dollars to Curium Excavations. I am enclosing my cheque for one thousand dollars and shall contribute two thousand additional dollars in due course to make the resumption of our work at Cyprus possible this winter or next spring. It would be greatly appreciated if you would cable the amount of my cheque, minus cable expenses, to the Ottoman Bank, Limassol, with instructions to credit same to the account of Curium Excavations, as they are in need of funds for guards' wages.
It is also my understanding that the Museum is willing to contribute to any excavations which may be arranged by Mr. Hall with the Greek Government on the Acropolis at Athens. I am willing to contribute fifty percent of the expenses within limits if the Museum and the Greek Government between them can contribute the balance. It is my understanding that the Museum is willing to do this provided the expense for such an undertaking is not too great. Mr. Hill told me when I was at Athens last summer that the excavations which he proposed would be of considerable importance. In my opinion it would be most fortunate if Mr. Hill is able to arrange this with the Greek Government.
I have cabled Mr. Hill your interest in resuming our work at Cyprus and in participating with the Greek Government in excavations on the Acropolis, and requested him to advise what funds would be required to make excavations on the Acropolis worth while. I also asked him in my cable whether he could have Mr. and Mrs. Young, members of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and at one time members of our expedition at Cyprus, resume their research work on our terracottas at Cyprus that these very interesting finds may be published as soon as possible. It will be the policy of the expedition to Cyprus to do all that is necessary for an early publication of those sites which have been excavated without committing itself to any new excavations except insofar as these may be necessary for a better understanding of excavations already completed. I shall advise you when I receive an answer from Mr. Hill is herewith enclosed.
A copy of my cable to Mr. Hill is herewith enclosed.
Handwritten: Sincerely yours
