February 13, 1940Dear George,
We got Miss Grace off safely, and her arrival should anticipate this letter. We bought her ticket for her from the cheque you so kindly sent, made some incidental payments and turned the balance over to her to be applied on account of salary and for incidental expenses. I enclose a summary of this account for your records.
I hope all is going smoothly with you and that the work is proving as interesting as it has in the past.
I have much on my mind at this time the problem of John Daniel for next year. As you know his fellowship is not renewable, so that if we can do nothing for him he will have to seek elsewhere for support. We are all convinced, however, that he is of just the calibre we wish to have for our curatorial staff, and I am particularly anxious to be able to offer him some sort of salary. I don't think it can be less than $1500 - which, goodness knows, is meagre enough - but it is the sum which almost all the younger members of our staff have started, so it is not out of line. Of this I can see my way clear to find $900 - provided I can count on the balance from outside sources. Would you possibly do this? If it meant diverting a contribution to the general purposes of the Museum which you have given in past years, this would be perfectly satisfactory, for it would be rendering the Museum a signal service. I should look to budgeting his whole salary the next year so it would not be a continuing obligation. But it so happens it is difficult to handle on my 1940-41 budget, which goes into effect July 1st. I should appreciate it very much if you could see your way clear to handling this.
With every best wish to you and your staff, believe me,
Sincerely yours,
Horace H. F. Jayne Director
