Gentlemen:-

A member of the Museum's staff, Mr. George H. McFadden has for several years been conducting archaeological work on the island of Cyprus under the sponsorship of the Museum. He left Europe before the outbreak of hostilities, planning to return to Cyprus in November in order to bring his work there to a conclusion, a matter of two or three more months of study.

I am writing to ask, therefore, whether, as the situation now stands, there would be any reason for withholding Mr. McFadden's passport. We would, of course, sail on a United States or neutral ship. We appreciate, naturally, that any advice you might be able to give at present would be subject to partial or complete change up to the date of his sailing, but it would be helpful to know in general whether or no the Department sees any present bar to his undertaking. The work to be done is of considerable scientific importance and will suffer greatly by postponement.

Yours very truly

Horace H. F. Jayne Director
