9/18/39[handwritten: by] by the usual way [handwritten: but] would want to come by way of Greece rather than sailing direct to Cyprus. I will cable you as soon as I know whether I want to risk sailing for Europe at all, and whether you think in view of the situation that there will be nothing to interfere with our work there.

You asked me to give you a report on my [handwritten: excavations] in Cyprus the last season and I am about to begin writing one now and you will receive it in due course. If I stay here I will work on the inscriptions and if the squeezes come I hope to be able to get a paper on them in a preliminary shape.

I sent two hundred pounds directly from Philadelphia to the Ottoman Bank at Cyprus in care of the Curium Excavations by cable on the second of September. I thought it best to send the money directly there rather than to you at Athens. The rate at that time was 4.08 and came to $812.00 plus the cable expenses.

Mrs. Hill was on the "Il de France" and it was a great surprise when we ran into each other. It was delightful having her aboard.

I have been in New York several days and just came here at the end of the week and do not know yet whether Pete has arrived at the University Museum but I forgot that it is closed on Mondays so I will call up again tomorrow. It is not a bad year for him to be here as it has turned out.

I have not received any mail from Morgan & Co. [handwritten: (my forwarding address)] for a month but it is on its way now I imagine, so if you have written me in the meanwhile your letter should reach me very soon. I suppose you do not know of course whether Mr. Hyde will be going to Troy next spring. If he should not be and if we plan to resume work at Cyprus I suppose you will be able to come down earlier in the year if we are not there already this fall.

Yours as ever,

Handwritten: George H. McFadden

P.S. I find I have the large bill I thought I must have left in Cyprus for the wood and other material for the restoration of the mosaic and will send you a fuller account of all the mosaic expenses this week.
