19 August 1939Dear George:

Your letter of August 8 with check for $500 to the order of Curium Excavations reached me the 13th. With it I have paid for Pete's passage to New York, for the $40 of AmEx checks and Drs.700 given him is settling accounts, and for postage and telegrams; and have bought a check for £64:18 which has been deposited in the Excavation account with the Ottoman Bank, Limassol.

I thought it best -- and I think you will agree -- to pay what we owed here and send the balance to Limassol, rather than to forward the check to the bank there and let the AmEx account here wait. We are now in order until the middle of September, but I am expecting a second check -- either the $190 or so/?? named in next the last paragraph of my letter of August 9 or the considerably larger sum suggested at the end of that letter -- which I shall send on intact. (As I have written this paragraph I have for the first time felt a little doubt about the wisdom of handling the 500 as I did. We may have lost Drs.150 or so by it)

I shall expect also soon now the items you have for June 10 to 23 of expenditure for the mosaic. For June 24 I have already the memorandum of the sort he says he handed you after each payday. This I enclose, after drawing off the mosaic items (marked "Bam. & Mos 8-9-8 1/2" I have asked John's X), as to one of which, help, hoping that he will find some record or that Christo can remember about how much was Bamboula and how much Mosaic. As the item was clearly for labor I imagine that the details will be found in Christo's big book.

John's account August 1-12 shows only two accounts unpaid (Milk and Laundry for July, 2:3:7 1/2). Current expenses at Episkopi were 14:15:4 1/2 (incl.labor 9:18:5 1/2) Larnaca-Nicosia trip (Pete toL) 1:19:3 1/2 Well and cesspool 5: 5:1 Yorko: rents & compensation (gold) 16:10:0 8: 0:0 40:10:0

Advance JFD

The cesspool has been finished, but the well will go on for a while yet, apparently. Labor on it costs 1:10:0 per week.

Mr Last had tea here one day last week. He has now returned to Cyprus. He will be ready to work for us in the fall, but will not be satisfied with one of the ground-floor rooms. He suggests that perhaps we can get him the upper part of the Chrysostomides house if it is not practicable to let him have one of the upper rooms of the new house. I did not think to ask him what he would think of John Wyeth's room. Anyhow I imagine that we can make satisfactory arrangements. He takes the prospect of coming seriously enough so that he left me, unasked, a short list of things we ought to bring from America or England. I enclose his note and am inviting him to write to you directly the other suggestions he speaks of. By the way see if you can find in Munich a 3m folding measure like the one we have but with the figures of the reverse right side up
