March 9, 1939Dear Mr. Logue:-
Pursuant to our telephone conversation I am writing the details of the matter of Mr. McFadden's contributions to the Museum. We have regularly contributed towards the financing of the Curium excavations with the understanding that Mr. McFadden would make up the difference between our contribution and the costs of excavations. In the last season we sent him as follows:
December 24, 1937 - $1,000. Draft to order of G. H. McFadden through Ionian Bank, Limassol. May 11, 1938 - $1,500. Draft to order of Curium Excavations, through Ottoman Bank, Limassol.
Handwritten: number 2916 \ {hw: number 23280
You report that Mr. McFadden paid out from his own account (into which went, presumably, the $1,000. of December 24, 1937) a total of $2,200., and we have no means of telling whether this $2,200. was all his personal contribution or whether our $1,000. was part of it.
Our treasurer is naturally hesitant to subscribe to a statement regarding the amount of his contribution which might be erroneous and which when the government came to check his return might be cause for questioning the accuracy of the return. We are, however, naturally in every way anxious to have him benefit fully by deducting the amount of his contribution to this undertaking of the Museum.
I suggest you cable him asking him to state the amount of his personal contribution, whereupon we shall be only too glad to write and confirm this amount so that you may attach this statement to his Income Tax return.
Yours very truly
