Poste Restante, Mykonos, July , 1937
Dear Mr. Hill,
I suppose that you are back from Troy by now, though, to judge by the weather reports, you are probably as far from the heat of Athens as possible. I hope that Nemea, if you are there, is as cool and restful as Mykonos. As a matter of fact it has been warm even here, but not uncomfortably so, just enough to give the proper stimulus for long spells at the beach. I would like to stay on here another two weeks or so, and will if it is all right with the police; but I have been here nearly a month now, and it is time for me to get a permis-de-sejour. If the police here can arrange it I will stay on; otherwise I may have to return to Athens to tend to it.
My stay in Athens will be just as short as possible, but there will be ample time to get in touch with you if you are there, and tell you of the last weeks in Cyprus. You have doubtless seen Virginia and heard much of the more important news already, such as the fact that I didn't do anything about shipping off the Lapithos things. I found myself very tired as soon as the nervous pull of finishing up the dig was over, and arranged everything so as to get away just as soon as possible. I am taking resting seriously now, but I am still far from as rested as I should like to be. I was working several hours a day here, but I have had to stop even that.
I dug two weeks after you left, in many ways the best of the season. We got good Mycenaean levels in the north-west corner of the main area, and found an early deposit which may be neolithic, and certainly contains neolithic sherds. I didn't mention the neolithic sherds to anybody official, because the mere presence of one sherd on our side of the river would be enough to bring Dikaios running to the early Bronze Age site. I do hope that we can secure our rights to everything on our side of the river fairly soon. I am working toward a preliminary report on this season's work, and would like to mention the neolithic things, but hardly dare with things as they are. -OVER- … continues
