9 Plutarch Street, Athens,
20 March 1934Dear Mr. Jayne:
Since the despatch of my last letter to you concerning Curium I have heard from Mr.Dikaios (Curator of the Cyprus Museum) by letter, and from Mr.McFadden by letter and cablegram.
Mr.Dikaios, writing on February 23d, undertakes to attend to securing permission of land-owners and the formal official Permit to enable us to enter upon the work proposed at Curium. He intended then very shortly to visit the site and to see the owners of the lots we may wish to excavate. As I have heard nothing further I think we may assume that there has been no serious hitch and that the Permit will probably be ready before we reach Cyprus.
Mr.McFadden, who wrote on the day of your first cablegram (Feb.8), tells me that he intends bringing his schooner and suggests that we might perhaps live aboard her either close off Curium or at Limassol. I replied on March 2nd. It will be both very pleasant and useful to have the boat at hand, but we could not live aboard her off Curium without constant risk of being cut off from our job by the impossibility of getting ashore. There is no shelter there at all. At Limassol I think we could always embark and disembark, although the harbor is a very poor one, but it is nine or ten miles from the job and there would inevitably be great loss of time in commuting. we may very likely begin this way, however, until suitable rooms can be found in the village nearest the excavation.
On March 18th Mr.McFadden cabled me from Gibraltar that he expects to arrive here April 1st. He asked when I expect to go to Cyprus and I have replied, by wire to Naples, that I count upon being ready to sail by April 10. If he wishes to set out earlier and to cruise a bit on the way to Cyprus I can overtake him in Crete or at Rhodes, or can sail directly to Limassol - by Italian ship the 11th, or by Greek line the 14th.
Sincerely yours,
