End of excavation in H8/1-H8/2-H9/3
(no work since 30 September in these squares)
Main elements: - to the west, pillar 476, torn out, forming part of a wall partition of the great wall 432 - in the centre, massif and staircase 459 (the east flight, reduced to a few fragments of slabs, named 455 in 1985, must take up a locus no. 459, the same number designating elsewhere the central massif and the stairs it supports) - to the south, floor 477, well bounded by the stairs, massifs and partition pillars to the north, and bonded to the south with the slabs of marmaro bordering wall 432 (basin?, but no outflow visible...) - cf., in H8/3, the plaster return bordering the marmaro 447 against floor 477;
Remarks:
- the small wall 454, unexplained in 1985, lies in the alignment exact of the east face of massif 459 (error on the 1985 plan?), and seems to represent the total length of the massif supporting the stairs = 6,50 m. This could be confirmed in the trench J9/4 (PLG excavation), UF 143: the badly bonded blocks that sink into the east baulk of the trench are 6,50 m from the south face of massif 491 (J8/2) and could constitute the back of the supporting massif of the stairs. To be verified during the next season.
- the isolated stone (without locus no.), north of square H8/1, could belong, very hypothetically, to the wall west of massif 459 ?
- it is assumed that pillar 474 of the partition 453-474 is founded lower than pillar 453, but this has not been excavated: it is assumed that pillar 453, which has not been excavated down to its base, is founded at the same level as wall 432.
